A breathing drill for more calm…

🧠
First of all, I have a new YouTube video out with one of my ALL TIME FAVOURITE handstand drills!
Check it out here!
What (the TL:DR)
Not being able to breathe easily would surely put you in panic-mode, BUT...
***intentionally*** doing what I call a lung squash breath may actually make you feel more calm.
Why (the geeky neurology)
There's an area of the brainstem called the medulla oblongata which takes care of lots of really basic functions.
One of its functions is telling the breathing muscles to work, so that you breathe!
Another is turning down the dial on sympathetic ("fight or flight" -- or I prefer to call it "focused and alert") tone.
So when we do a breathing technique which makes our breathing muscles have to work harder than normal, we activate the medulla.
When the medulla is activated, we get less of that sympathetic activity!
How (apply it to your life)
There are many ways to do this, but one way is by doing a side bend, and focusing on breathing into the lung that's squashed.
I demonstrate it here in this short video.
Wishing you many calm breaths this week,
Adell xoxo
