Is your pelvis throwing you off balance?
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of science-backed goodness to help you move better and feel unstoppable.
🧠
What (the TL:DR)
Your brain has multiple maps -- these are neural wirings that help us remember and understand all sorts of things:
- spacial memory maps: e.g. where your bedroom is in your house
- proprioceptive maps: e.g. if your arm is in front of you or behind you as you walk
- movement maps: e.g. how to tilt your pelvis to stack your spine and legs in balancing postures
Why (the geeky neurology)
Maps are "use it or lose it" and can become "blurry" or "fuzzy", resulting in confusion or feeling uncoordinated.
We can clarify these maps by adding more detailed data to them:
e.g. by practising awareness of your pelvis and how to tilt it --

...we can give our brain better information about how to control the pelvis in tougher balances, like handstand!
How (apply it to your life)
Like I demonstrate in this 20-second video, practise tilting your pelvis (like cat/cow) in simpler postures like downward dog, and then perhaps while using the wall to help you balance in handstand.
Lack of awareness of the pelvis is a very common problem I see in people learning to handstand! (And I was there too for years!)
Twerk it out,
