What (the TL:DR)
You can drive neural plasticity (which is what's needed for learning a new skill) by playing around with the speed of the movement.
Why (the geeky neurology)
You've probably heard that repetition is the key to mastery. And yes, reps count!
But your brain learns faster if more areas of the brain are involved in a movement.
If you do a movement the SAME WAY every time, your brain doesn't have to learn anything new; you're just reinforcing the existing pathway.
However, if you change:
- your acceleration (getting moving from stillness)
- your velocity (how fast you're moving)
while maintaining the precision of how you move (i.e. not getting sloppy and losing form)
then DOZENS more regions of the brain get activated than if you simply repeat the movement in the same way.
How (apply it to your life)
One example is goddess squats. (Every power yoga teacher loves a goddess squat!)
Instead of just doing the squats in the speed that comes naturally,
play around with the acceleration and velocity!
For example: make the top of the squat fast, and the bottom slow.
