Why lifting weights won’t make you tight

What (the TL:DR)

Your flexibility is dictated by your brain. 

Which means lifting weights doesn’t magically turn your muscles into tiny concrete blocks.

You can absolutely be strong and flexible. Your brain is adaptable. Your body is adaptable. Your excuses are adaptable too 😉 

Why (the geeky neurology)

Something powerful happens when you stop obsessing over “lengthening tissues” and start teaching your brain that a range of motion is safe.

Here’s the thing:

  • Strength training improves range of motion in the ranges you train.

  • Flexibility training improves range of motion in the ranges you train.

  • Humans get good at whatever weird thing they repeatedly do.

Studies on flexibility under general anaesthesia have produced some surprisingly messy results. If flexibility was purely about tissue stiffness, we’d expect everyone to become dramatically more flexible when neural activity is reduced. That doesn’t consistently happen.

Which suggests your nervous system isn’t just applying the brakes. It’s helping drive the car.

Hypermobile people are another clue. Yes, our connective tissues are often more compliant. But many of us also process information about joint position differently. In other words: bendy people aren’t just made of stretchier stuff—we're often getting different messages about where our limits are.

So why do people swear lifting makes them tight?

Because sometimes it feels like it does.

1. DOMS

You know that special kind of leg-day regret where sitting on the toilet becomes a tactical operation?

That’s DOMS.

After a hard workout, microscopic muscle damage and the inflammatory processes that follow can make your nervous system more protective. Stretching suddenly feels harder. 

Not because your muscles have shortened overnight, but because your brain has temporarily changed the terms and conditions.

2. Range of motion

Your body adapts to what you ask of it.

If your split squat only ever goes to a certain depth, your body gets really good at that depth.

If your yoga practice regularly asks for Hanumanasana, your body gets better at that too.

Neither is wrong. They’re just different requests.

3. Stretch tolerance

This one’s huge.

After a heavy training block, muscles may be sore, fatigued, swollen, or generally grumpy.

The tissues aren't suddenly shorter.

But the stretch sensation shows up sooner.

Your brain interprets that as “Woah there, friend.”

And suddenly you feel tight.

Feeling tight and actually being less flexible are not always the same thing.

How (apply it to your life)

Want to get strong without sacrificing flexibility?

  • Don’t panic when DOMS temporarily steals your favourite shape. It’ll be back.

  • Train through deep ranges when appropriate. Squat to malasana. Sink into the bottom of your split squat. Follow along one of my ​Yoga with Weights classes​ on MWA.

  • Keep doing flexibility work if flexibility matters to you. The S.A.I.D. principle is undefeated: you get good at what you practice.

  • Prioritise recovery. Sleep. Hydration. Food. The boring stuff that secretly runs the show. Remember that adaptation happens during recovery, not while you’re collecting suffering points.

  • Reduce chronic stress where you can. A nervous system that feels safe is generally more willing to explore new ranges of motion.

The goal isn’t to choose between strength and flexibility.

The goal is to be strong enough to use your flexibility—and flexible enough to use your strength.
