Why you may need to try harder…
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of science-backed goodness to help you move better and feel unstoppable.
🧠
I recently had a little wake-up call.
I realised the work I started almost 2 years ago to get better at resting, saying "no", and being okay with not being optimal all the time was overdone.
I saw I had become too comfortable, for too long. I had neglected the "discipline" part of the practice.
And so I wanted to remind you that...
What (the TL:DR)
Our brains need to be challenged to the point of discomfort to make any meaningful changes.
The science of neuroplasticity shows that if something feels easy and familiar, then change simply won't happen.
Why (the geeky neurology)
Our brains are wired to be in "just try not to suck" mode.
Seriously!
Our brains are wired to INHIBIT behaviours that can harm you.
Not to make us do things optimally or push into the kind of discomfort that leads to growth.
I realised I had totally stagnated in several areas of my life for this reason. And when I got to be a student of a handstand coach, I saw where my Santosha was outweighing my Tapas. I saw that if I want to keep improving, I have to do some difficult things again!
How (apply it to your life)
Train the neural wiring needed to associate doing hard things with getting you to your goals.
Mindset makes all the difference!
Be your own cheerleader and remind yourself how great you're doing for choosing that difficult thing.
Use affirmations like "I'm choosing short term discomfort so in the long run I'm stronger"
And take time to look back after completing something difficult to revel in how great it feels to have accomplished it.
Keep up the work (/play),
Adell xoxo
