Are your eyes holding you back?
"Brainy What-Why-How"
Your weekly nibble of science-backed goodness to help you move better and feel unstoppable.
đ§
What (the TL:DR)
Giving your brain a break from your visual system đ could be exactly what you need to feel better in your movement practice, or even to achieve a skill!
Why (the geeky neurology)
You may have heard me talk about the importance of the visual system on how you move, like:
- using your drishti for better flexibility đī¸
- exercising your eye muscles đĒ
- or using the eyes to teach the brain to reduce pain đŠâđĢ
This is because the visual system is a major player in how your brain gets information, and information from the eyes goes into SEVERAL regions of the brain.
Therefore: sometimes it might be just what you need to give yourself a Visual Reset.
How (apply it to your life)
1ī¸âŖ First test how you feel. Maybe in something you're working on, like floating from downward dog to uttanasana, or a split.
2ī¸âŖ Then cup your hands over your eyes and block out all the light.
Even with your eyes open, you shouldn't see any light.
Hold here, in stillness, breathing, for 20-30 seconds. (Yes, you can blink.)
3ī¸âŖ Then retest your skill.
If it got better, it might be a sign that your brain would love less stimulation from your eyes.
If it got worse or stayed the same, then at least you got those few seconds of stillness đ
Rest is productive,
Adell xoxo
